Body relationships describe control between buyers and sellers; wicks show rejected prices. Textbook gaps are more relevant to session-based markets than continuously traded crypto or FX. The diagrams are schematics, not minimum tick-by-tick specifications.
Candle Anatomy
Four Prices, One Period
The real body spans open to close; the upper and lower wicks reach the period's high and low. A bullish candle closes above its open, while a bearish candle closes below. Color alone does not show whether the close is above or below the previous candle.
Pattern rules should use completed bars unless the strategy explicitly tests intrabar behavior. The active candle remains provisional until its timeframe closes.
Bullish reversal candidate
Morning Star
3 bars shown
Context
Most useful after a sustained decline or a sharp selloff into support.
Structure
A decisive bearish candle, a small real body showing reduced downside control, then a strong bullish candle that closes well into the first body.
Confirmation
Prefer a closed third candle, followed by acceptance above the pattern midpoint or a break of the formation high.
Failure / risk
A close below the formation low invalidates the usual reversal thesis. In 24-hour markets, body separation matters more than textbook gaps.
Bearish reversal candidate
Evening Star
3 bars shown
Context
Most useful after a sustained advance or an acceleration into resistance.
Structure
A decisive bullish candle, a small real body showing reduced upside control, then a strong bearish candle that closes well into the first body.
Confirmation
Prefer a closed third candle, followed by acceptance below the pattern midpoint or a break of the formation low.
Failure / risk
A close above the formation high invalidates the usual reversal thesis. A small middle candle alone is not a short signal.
Bullish momentum sequence
Three White Soldiers
3 bars shown
Context
Strongest when it leaves a base, reclaim level, or orderly pullback—not after an already exhausted vertical run.
Structure
Three bullish real bodies with successively higher closes. Each candle generally opens within or near the prior body and closes near its own high.
Confirmation
Look for follow-through or a controlled retest that holds above the sequence midpoint. Expanding participation can strengthen the read.
Failure / risk
Very long bodies or growing upper wicks can signal late entry and poor reward-to-risk. The pattern can fail beneath overhead supply.
Bearish momentum sequence
Three Black Crows
3 bars shown
Context
Strongest when it leaves a top, failed breakout, or orderly bear-market rally—not after a mature vertical decline.
Structure
Three bearish real bodies with successively lower closes. Each candle generally opens within or near the prior body and closes near its own low.
Confirmation
Look for follow-through or a weak retest that remains beneath the sequence midpoint. Expanding participation can strengthen the read.
Failure / risk
Very long bodies or growing lower wicks can signal capitulation and poor short-entry location. Nearby support can stop continuation.
Bullish continuation candidate
Bullish Three-Bar Play
3 bars shown
Context
Look for it during an established advance or as price expands cleanly out of a base, with room before the next resistance zone.
Structure
A wide bullish expansion candle, a narrow pause that holds in the upper portion of the first range, then a bullish third candle that breaks the first high.
Confirmation
The third candle must actually clear the expansion high. A close above it is stricter than an intrabar breakout entry.
Failure / risk
A deep second-bar retracement or loss of the pause low weakens the pattern. Definitions vary, so document the exact range and trigger rules you test.
Bearish continuation candidate
Bearish Three-Bar Play
3 bars shown
Context
Look for it during an established decline or as price expands cleanly out of a top, with room before the next support zone.
Structure
A wide bearish expansion candle, a narrow pause that holds in the lower portion of the first range, then a bearish third candle that breaks the first low.
Confirmation
The third candle must actually clear the expansion low. A close below it is stricter than an intrabar breakdown entry.
Failure / risk
A deep second-bar retracement or break of the pause high weakens the pattern. Definitions vary, so document the exact range and trigger rules you test.
Bullish reversal candidate
Three Inside Up
3 bars shown
Context
Look for it after a decline, especially where sellers have already tested a visible support or prior low.
Structure
A large bearish body, a smaller bullish body contained inside the first real body, then a bullish third candle that closes above the first body high.
Confirmation
The third close is the confirmation component. A later break of the three-candle high provides a stricter trigger.
Failure / risk
Failure back through the inside candle—and especially below the formation low—weakens or invalidates the setup.
Bearish reversal candidate
Three Inside Down
3 bars shown
Context
Look for it after an advance, especially where buyers have already tested visible resistance or a prior high.
Structure
A large bullish body, a smaller bearish body contained inside the first real body, then a bearish third candle that closes below the first body low.
Confirmation
The third close is the confirmation component. A later break of the three-candle low provides a stricter trigger.
Failure / risk
Failure back through the inside candle—and especially above the formation high—weakens or invalidates the setup.
Bullish reversal candidate
Three Outside Up
3 bars shown
Context
Use after a downswing or failed breakdown, with more weight when the engulfing candle reclaims a known level.
Structure
A bearish candle, a bullish second body that engulfs the first real body, then a third bullish candle that closes higher.
Confirmation
The third candle should preserve the engulfing candle's control rather than immediately retracing it. A close above the formation high is stronger.
Failure / risk
A close back below the engulfing candle midpoint is an early warning; a break below its low invalidates the standard structure.
Bearish reversal candidate
Three Outside Down
3 bars shown
Context
Use after an upswing or failed breakout, with more weight when the engulfing candle loses a known level.
Structure
A bullish candle, a bearish second body that engulfs the first real body, then a third bearish candle that closes lower.
Confirmation
The third candle should preserve the engulfing candle's control rather than immediately retracing it. A close below the formation low is stronger.
Failure / risk
A close back above the engulfing candle midpoint is an early warning; a break above its high invalidates the standard structure.
