The Square of 9 is a spiral number chart used in Gann-style market theory. It begins with 1 at the center and expands outward through a square spiral. Instead of treating price as only a linear value, the Square of 9 treats numbers as positions inside a 360-degree field. From that view, a price level can be studied by angle, distance from center, relationship to other numbers, and placement inside a repeating cycle.

What It Is
The first full ring around the center contains 2 through 9, which is why the chart is called the Square of 9. The chart can also be understood as expanding through rings of 8, 16, 24, and so on: ring n contains 8n cells around the center.

The square spiral starts from 1 at the center and expands outward through numbered shells. The grid makes number position, diagonal alignment, and angular movement visible at the same time.

Square Roots And Full Rotations
360-Degree Movement
One full 360-degree rotation outward increases a number's square root by approximately 2. For example, 49 has a square root of 7. One full rotation outward reaches 81, which has a square root of 9. Moving inward by one full cycle decreases the square root by approximately 2.
Odd And Even Squares
Odd square numbers such as 9, 25, 49, 81, and 121 tend to line up on one diagonal. Even square numbers such as 4, 16, 36, 64, and 100 appear on the opposite side. This creates an odd/even polarity that can be studied as complementary number structure.
In theoretical market analysis, a major high or low can be placed on the Square of 9. Related numbers are then found by moving around the chart by important angles. Shells And Range
Each shell contains more numbers than the shell before it, so higher-priced regions can have wider spacing between angular levels. A move from 10 to 20 is geometrically different from a move from 1,000 to 1,010, even though both are 10 points.

Chart Overlay
Using Gann
Use a single chart window on any supported timeframe—including custom minute intervals such as 3m, 5m, 9m, or 119m—and click Gann in the chart banner. Gann is crossed out only for multi-window layouts and percentage-based instruments such as Treasury yields. Opening the compact toolbar does not place an anchor by itself.
While Gann is active, the chart Price Panel is forced to the single Price scheme. Percent, Zodiac, and a second price scheme cannot remain selected until Gann is removed.
Choose the up arrow for a Low anchor or the down arrow for a High anchor, then click the chart. On Candlestick and Bar charts, Low follows the selected bar's lower anchor and High follows its upper anchor. On Line, Area, and Columns charts, both directions follow the plotted close value instead of hidden OHLC data. Dragging an arrow to another bar snaps horizontally and never derives the level from the pointer's vertical position. The compact panel intentionally has no separate marker-settings gear.
Choose SQ9 or Hex to show the chart overlay. Its attached, draggable editor controls whole-overlay and underlying-chart opacity, bodies, cardinal/diagonal guides, Orbs, Low/High cell fills, scale, position, Border Colors, and Number Color. Closing the overlay restores the chart opacity automatically. Close the editor with its own X. The chart overlay does not expose Price Translation or custom-anchor controls. Orbs require Astro bodies: turning Astro bodies off also turns Orbs off and disables the Orbs toggle until bodies are shown again.
In the lower workbench, Price Translation defaults every symbol to modulo 1-361. The grouped menu offers modulo 1-361 and 0-360, followed by Recommended, Unit choices from $1,000,000 through $0.000001, and the anchored schemes. Recommended selects a power-of-ten Unit that keeps roughly three to four meaningful price digits and shows the resolved Unit in the selector. For example, 112,345 resolves to Unit $100 and a working count of 1,123. Every Unit divides price by its increment and wraps that count through repeating 360-position blocks. Unit $1 preserves the former whole-dollar behavior; larger Units discard lower digits and show their reduced working counts, while fractional Units retain their selected price precision. If a positive price is smaller than an explicitly selected Unit, it maps to the first positive Unit bucket and keeps the displayed ladder at 1-361 rather than producing a negative range. An exact multiple of 360 occupies cell 360 rather than cell 0. The workbench's Price Translation info icon explains these behaviors and closes when you click outside it. With no symbol selected, the lower workbench offers only the two modulo schemes and continues its numbers into later odd-square rungs rather than restarting at 0 or 1.
Double-click any SQ9 square or Hex cell to add, color, edit, or delete a note saved for that geometry and active symbol. Individual chart-overlay note saves and deletes participate in chart Undo/Redo; workbench notes use the workbench history. Dragging from a cell still pans normally. Reset Notes clears only that symbol's notes; chart-overlay resets use chart Undo/Redo, while workbench resets use the workbench's own history.
The upper Gann chart overlay and lower SQ9/Hex workbench are separate tools. Each keeps its own translation choice, geometry, notes, note colors, display settings, and saved state. The upper overlay refreshes the current Workbench Astro-body render payload so its Astro bodies toggle cannot remain on an empty snapshot; unrelated settings do not synchronize. Price Translation remains configurable in the lower workbench; the chart overlay retains its compatible stored translation behavior without presenting an editor for it.
Placement turns off after one anchor by default. Closing the compact toolbar leaves the overlay on the chart. Use the eye beside Gann to hide or restore it, and use the adjacent X to remove it.
Select an arrow to drag or resize it. Delete removes the selected arrow first; Clear Low Arrows and Clear High Arrows remove only that translated side for the active symbol.
Saving a named Workspace includes every placed Gann arrow and the current chart-overlay settings, including SQ9/Hex mode, translation, bodies, colors, and opacity. Reset Workspace clears only the live copy; loading the saved Workspace restores it. Loading a Gann Template afterward overrides presentation settings only and never replaces the Workspace's placed arrows.
Load and Delete flyouts open toward whichever side has room and stay inside the viewport. Workbench Board Size and Orbs remain available in fullscreen mode.

Timing Counts
The Square of 9 can also be used to study days, dates, or cycle counts from a major high or low. When price reaches an important level while a time count reaches an important angle, some traders consider that a stronger price-time relationship.

360-Degree Cycle Markers
Some Gann-style methods place the Square of 9 inside a zodiac wheel. In this framework, planetary movement is treated as a cycle marker inside the same 360-degree structure, not as a guaranteed cause of price movement.
Square of 9 levels should be combined with market structure, trend, volume, volatility, momentum, risk management, backtesting, position sizing, and confirmation from price action. No geometric tool should be used alone.
